Why Thermography?

How Does it Work?

The high-resolution infrared thermal imaging technology, initially developed by the US Military, is not subject to patenting by those with a vested interest in breast cancer business ventures. This technology is crucial for breast thermography, a safe imaging for women that does not require physical contact. To accurately monitor breast health, the skin must be exposed to the air and an infrared camera to measure the infrared heat emitted from the skin's surface. After cooling the skin for 10 minutes, capturing the images only takes moments. You can see the images for yourself! A doctor utilizes specialized software to interpret the breast's temperatures, symmetry, vascularity, and physiology, with these findings being monitored for changes over time.

Is Thermography Proven?

Breast Thermography
Breast thermography was cleared by the FDA in 1982 as an adjunctive screening tool — meaning it's designed to be used alongside other breast health screenings. It uses infrared imaging to map heat and blood flow patterns in breast tissue, offering a radiation-free, compression-free option.
Mammography vs. Thermography
A mammogram is an anatomical test — using radiation and compression — designed to detect existing structural changes like tumors. Thermography is a physiological test that looks at heat and vascular patterns, which practitioners use to track changes over time.
The two tools measure different things. Because thermography does not use radiation or compression, many women find it a more comfortable compliment to their care.

Research

We provide world-leading breast thermography services in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Monterey counties, imaging thousands of women for over a decade while focusing on monitoring breast health. Breast thermography has been clinically utilized for over 40 years and supported by more than 800 reviewed studies in medical literature, establishing it as a safe imaging method for women to effectively monitor their breasts. Over 300,000 women have participated in these studies, with some investigations involving large groups ranging from 37,000 to 118,000 women. Research conducted at esteemed medical teaching institutions, such as Johns Hopkins University Medical School, has established normal values for the distribution of heat across various regions of the body. Deviations from these normal values are assessed and correlated with suspected injuries or diseases, much like the interpretation of blood or urine laboratory studies. Since the pattern of surface heat reflects internal structure, thermography allows for a detailed view of your physiological response

Thermograms Speak for Themselves

Please review our presentation video. Breast thermography can be a useful complement to breast health monitoring. Partnering with a whole-health practitioner who can help address inflammatory processes and support overall wellness is an important part of a safe, informed approach to imaging for women.
